Subject: Wood Packing Material (WPM)
Effective February 1st, 2006, USA to enforce new Wood Packaging Regulations
The US Department of Agriculture's new Wood Packaging Material (WPM) regulations for pallets and crates will come into effect on February 1, to protect the country from an infestation of non-indigenous insects.
From that time onwards, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspectors will be required to make sure that all wooden pallets and crates used in the packaging of cargo carry a "legible and permanent" mark that states the wood has been treated either with heat or methyl bromide to kill harmful insects that may be present.
Failure to appropriately mark such wooden containers, including in-transit shipments, could possibly result in the re-export of goods.
